Carbon fiber has been used in bicycles as a high-tech material in the past decade. Strictly speaking, carbon fiber is not a pure carbon element, but a mixture of carbon elements that are woven and then bonded and reinforced with epoxy resin. Due to technical reasons, the epoxy resin used in early carbon fiber would even decompose in the sun. With the advancement of science and technology, the shortcomings of this excellent material are gradually being overcome.
Generally speaking, carbon fiber as a bicycle material has the following characteristics:
1. Extremely light weight: Carbon fiber road frames weighing around 1,200 grams can be seen everywhere. Since the mass of carbon is only 1.6 grams/cubic centimeter, making a frame of about 1 kilogram is no longer a dream.
2. Good impact absorption performance. Carbon fiber can effectively absorb shock and maintain good rigidity. This characteristic makes it a good competition grade material.
3. Frames of various shapes can be made. Different from the manufacturing process of ordinary metal frames, carbon fiber frames generally first make a mold, then put carbon fiber sheets on the mold, and finally use epoxy resin for cementing. This manufacturing process can use aerodynamics to create a frame with extremely low wind resistance.
At present, the main problems with this material are the following two points:
1. Complex stress calculation. The carbon fiber frame is made of carbon fiber, which is characterized by strong tensile strength but weak shear strength. Complex stress calculations (longitudinal rigidity, transverse rigidity) are required during processing, and the carbon fiber sheets are overlapped and formed based on the calculations. Generally speaking, carbon fiber resists surface impact very well, but its puncture resistance is very poor. That is to say, it doesn't matter if you drop it horizontally and shoot vertically. What you are afraid of is that you encounter one or two sharp pebbles when you drop it horizontally and shoot vertically. That cannot be solved by welding it.
2. It is expensive. Compared with titanium alloy, the price of carbon fiber frame is even worse. The price of top-level carbon fiber frame is tens of thousands. This is mainly because the production process of carbon fiber frame requires a lot of manual work. , and the scrap rate is very high, causing a large increase in costs.
